Project Overview

A powerful, cinematic installation from poet and artist JulianKnxx, Chorus in Rememory of Flight explores identity, memory, and belonging through stories of the African diaspora. Exhibited at the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian in Lisbon, this marked our sixth collaboration with Julian — delivering consistent, high-impact technical support to realise his creative vision across multiple European venues.

Objectives:

To faithfully deliver a cinematic, six-screen video installation that reflects the emotional and visual detail of JulianKnxx’s work. The system had to be self-sufficient, precisely synchronised, visually seamless, and robust enough to run over a five-month public exhibition without intervention from the gallery team.

Brief:

Support JulianKnxx and the curatorial team at Gulbenkian in the technical delivery of Chorus in Rememory of Flight. Install and programme a networked multi-screen playback system capable of perfect 4K synchronisation, remote monitoring, and fully autonomous operation within the gallery environment. Consistency across venues and creative fidelity were critical.

Project Fulfilment

Conceptual Design:

Having worked with JulianKnxx across previous venues including London, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Sligo, and Accra, we understood the creative ambition of the piece. The exhibition format involved large-scale multi-screen presentation in a cinematic arrangement — requiring absolute visual consistency and an immersive audio-visual atmosphere that would remain powerful throughout the exhibition’s duration.

Technical Design:

We provided a custom video playback system using two Apple Mac computers — networked to each other and configured to run six 4K video feeds in perfect synchronisation. Remote monitoring capabilities were built in, allowing us to respond to and resolve any issues off-site. All content was mapped and tested in advance, with the system locked down for maximum reliability and minimal user intervention.

Project Management:

We collaborated closely with both Julian’s studio and the team at Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian to schedule load-in, testing, and final sign-off — coordinating timelines across shipping, install, calibration, and gallery handover. Our long-standing relationship with the artist enabled smooth communication and rapid resolution of any technical adaptations needed on site.

Installation & Build:

Our team completed a full installation on-site in Lisbon, handling system setup, calibration, and final configuration. All playback equipment was discreetly housed, cable runs were carefully managed, and the final install aligned perfectly with Julian’s visual and spatial layout for the piece. We ensured the gallery team were briefed on system start-up and monitoring, while the exhibition remained fully independent from their day-to-day operations.

Event Delivery:

The exhibition ran flawlessly for over five months, with no need for on-site intervention thanks to the system’s autonomous setup and remote management capabilities. Playback fidelity and screen calibration remained consistent throughout the run, helping preserve the emotional and cinematic impact of the work.
