Project Overview

LUX Technical was commissioned by Hayward Gallery to supply and install a 7.2 m × 7.2 m high-resolution LED video wall for John Gerrard’s Surrender (Flag) — a moving simulation of a white flag formed from vapour, projected onto an architectural setting in London as part of the exhibition Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis.

Objectives:

To create a large-scale LED display capable of rendering Gerrard’s real-time computer simulation with high brightness and fidelity, delivering a powerful visual landmark outside the Hayward Gallery.

Brief:

LUX was tasked with supplying and installing an outdoor-grade LED wall using ROE CB5 panels (5.76 mm pixel pitch, 6,000 nit brightness), fully integrated into a custom scaffold structure. The system had to operate continuously, maintain visual precision throughout changing daylight, and present Gerrard’s evolving digital artwork reliably over several months.

Project Fulfilment

Conceptual Design:

Collaborating with Hayward Gallery and the artist’s team, we configured display specifications that supported daylight readability, urban structural constraints, and seamless visual integrity.

Technical Design:

A 7.2 m × 7.2 m LED screen was assembled from 50+ ROE CB5 panels mounted on a clad scaffold frame with water ballast and black fabric wrap. We ensured power, network systems, and weather-safe infrastructure were built to spec while preserving aesthetic integrity and structural compliance

Project Management:

We coordinated closely with gallery contractors and engineers, managing installation timelines, safety documentation, and stakeholder approvals. Regular structural inspections were arranged to maintain stability during the exhibition.

Installation & Build:

Completed over approximately five working days, our team handled frame assembly, panel fitting, electrical setup, and commissioning. The LED screen was tested for color calibration and brightness transitions between day and night modes.

Event Delivery:

The installation performed reliably from June through early September, providing continuous playback of the real-time simulation. Enhanced brightness ensured visibility in direct sunlight, and the content loop ran seamlessly across all cycles of solar changes.
